Form Burnout to Balance: Fitness in Motherhood

From anxiety management to better sleep, exercise offers countless benefits. Exercise can also help prevent chronic illnesses, boost confidence, and change your epigenetics. It’s no surprise that God created our bodies for movement. Although we all know the benefits of exercise, we can still find ourselves stuck when it comes to how to start or where to pick back up.

While I’m sure you lead a busy life, Momma, I want to gently encourage you to prioritize your health and well-being—so you can care for the ones you love so deeply. Exercise helps us show up as the best version of ourselves—the version God has called us to be—especially when we do this journey with Christ.

Start by easing into it. One day on, one day off. Nothing too intense at first. Focus on building not just your core, but a resilient spirit. Take simple walks, try a dance class, or do some calisthenics. Create a dedicated space in your home for movement. Prepare the stroller the day before if you plan to walk. Allow yourself to embrace a healthier lifestyle, develop more discipline, and discover a new way to worship.

Balancing a schedule can be a big barrier for mommas wanting to start a fitness journey. For me, I’d either wake up early before the rest of my family, drive to the gym, and get a workout in. Other times, I’d exercise in the evenings after my husband got home, or out on the back porch of our two-bedroom apartment while the newborns napped. If you have access to a local gym with childcare, take advantage of it. Or ask a friend if you can swap childcare duties so you can both take time to exercise.

Numerous online classes and workouts can be completed from the comfort of your own home—with or without kids. However, if it starts to feel overwhelming, get back to basics. Simple movement is a great way to begin. Just getting fresh, oxygenated blood flowing through your body is a blessing. Consider reading scripture before your workout, or listening to worship or Christian rap to get energized. This journey is all the sweeter with God at the center.

Lastly, give yourself grace, Momma. Creating a routine can be hard, intimidating, and, honestly, sometimes draining. If you have multiple kiddos, it may take some rearranging—but don’t give up. Look for a support system. Does your church offer fitness classes? Do you have a trusted friend who can watch the kids while you go to the gym or take a quiet moment in a private room? Raising babies takes a village, but Christ sees your diligence and hard work. He will help you find a way to grow closer to Him.
