Trusting God with Our Children: 5 Prayers for Parents

We all know the deep, unshakable love we feel for our children. Many of us have found ourselves with tears on our pillows, wide awake in the stillness of night, burdened with worry about the world our children are growing up in.

What do we do when it feels like the world is trying to steal the innocence God placed in their hearts? How do we trust that the Lord will protect them? How can we believe they'll be safe once they leave our sight?

The hard truth is—we don’t always know. We don’t know what tomorrow holds. That reality can feel terrifying... or freeing, depending on our perspective.

But here’s what we do know: nothing happens outside of the Lord’s control. Your children were part of God’s plan from the very beginning. They were in His hands before the foundations of the earth were laid.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” — Jeremiah 1:5

As much as we care for our children, God cares for them even more. He has entrusted us with the great calling of raising these little disciples. We must trust His plans for their lives—knowing that we are not parenting alone. We can intercede for our children through prayer, asking for His guidance, protection, and peace.

Here are five prayers you can speak over your children. May these words bring you comfort, strength, and clarity as you walk this sacred journey.

  1. Prayer for Protection

“Father, I know that through You all things were made. You are our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). I pray You would hold my children close. Surround them with Your angels, Lord. Let not a single day pass without Your mighty hand upon them. You promise to deliver, protect, and shield us from harm. I lift my children to You and trust You with their lives—for they are Yours first. I ask for Your blessings and protection over them, that they may be covered by Your love each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

  1. Prayer for Discipleship

“Lord, You are good, and Your goodness endures forever. Thank You for entrusting me with these children. I pray I am leading them well. Help me to steward their hearts with care. Show me their gifts, so I may nurture the seeds You’ve planted within them. Let them grow up unafraid of man’s opinions, but with a holy reverence for You. I confess I don’t always get parenting right. I can be impatient or short-tempered. Forgive me, Father. Make me more like Jesus, so I can raise these precious ones in Your will and under Your guidance. Thank You for their laughter, their fingerprints, and the little blessings of each day. Help me raise them into faithful disciples. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

  1. Prayer for Wisdom

“Lord, I admit I don’t always know what’s best. I often try to control things that are outside my power. But You, my Good Shepherd, are in control. I pray for wisdom in my parenting—clarity in decisions, and discernment in both my heart and my children’s hearts. Let them walk in Your glory, drawing from Your strength and provision. Grant us wisdom today and every day. Thank You for this beautiful journey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

  1. Prayer for Discipline

“Father, discipline can be hard. Yet I know that through Your loving correction, we grow. I pray for a heart that embraces discipline—not out of anger, but out of love. Help me to guide my children with calmness, patience, peace, and faithfulness. Let me model discipline like Jesus did—with compassion and truth. Give me the strength to correct in love and speak with grace. Let no harsh words escape my lips. Fill me with the tools I need to raise them well, according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

  1. Prayer for Stewardship

“Thank You, Father, for the gift of these children. Let my love for them mirror Your love. Replace my worry, anger, or doubt with faith and compassion. Teach me to steward them well—serving them in humility, as I serve You. When parenting feels hard and I fall short, remind me of Your grace. Lead my heart by the Holy Spirit. Shape me into a parent who helps them become the disciples You’ve called them to be. In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.”

Final Thoughts

Parenting is holy work. It’s joyful, challenging, and often humbling. But remember: God walks this road with you. He loves your children even more deeply than you do. Take refuge in His promises, lean into prayer, and trust that He holds your family in His hands.
